How to Remove Golf Grips

When you have a set of golf clubs, you want them to last about 10 years. In order to make them last that long, you have to maintain. You need to keep them clean and you also need to take off old grips off your clubs when they get worn out.

Step 1

Take a pocket knife or a utility knife and make cuts going down the length of the existing grip. You should make 4 to 6 cuts down the grip that are long enough so you can get your fingers into the gaps.

Step 2

Pull off the grips with your fingers. You should be able to grab hold of them with signficant leverage so that you can pull the grips with enough force to remove them. After you have removed the grip, pull off the existing grip tape from the shaft of the club.

Step 3

Pop off the cap at the top of the grip. You should be able to get this off by pressing with your thumbs. If that does not do the job, use a screwdriver to give you additional leverage. Loosen the grip stop at the bottom of the grip and let it slide down to the hosel (the spot where the blade meets the shaft).

Step 4

Take a wash cloth soaked in warm water and use it to clean off the shaft. You should be able to get off most of the glue and dirt that were underneath the grip.

Step 5

Use grip solvent on stubborn spots. Eventually, you will be putting a new grip on the shaft of your club and you cannot put it on a dirty surface. The grip solvent will get rid of the dirtiest, stickiest spots on the shaft of the golf club. Rinse the club again with the warm wash clot and then dry it with a dry rag.
