How to Install Golf Club Grips

Installing your own golf grips is a great way to help maintain your clubs. Your set of golf clubs should last anywhere between 8 and 12 years, so changing grips on an annual basis for those who play frequently is a necessity. You can hand your clubs over to the local pro shop and pay for the services or you can do it yourself and help build the type of grips that are comfortable for your game.

Step 1

Make sure the shaft of your club is as clean as possible. After you have removed your old grips, there may be some type dirt or glue residue left on your shafts. Clean this off with grip solvent. One or two passes with some grip solvent on a rag will leave the club in a near-pristine shape. Then pass a rag that has been dipped in warm water to get the solvent off. Dry off the club in order to start the gripping process.

Step 2

Take double-sided grip tape and apply it to the shaft. Start at the top of the shaft and go in serpentine fashion about 10 to 12 inches down the club. Knead the grip tape so that it is in place smooth against the shaft of the club. There can be no gaps or air bubbles.

Step 3

Install the grip by slipping it on over the top of the shaft. The grip should be snapped into place over the first 10 inches of the shaft.

Step 4

Place the grip cap back into place. The grip cap is a small, round piece that fits right into the top of the shaft. It looks like a small button at the top of the club. Raise the grip stop back into place and the bottom of the shaft. The grip stop has been sitting on top of the hosel (where the shaft meets the club head) while the new grip has been installed.

Step 5

Use your fingers to knead the grip and make sure it sits tightly on the shaft. You don't want any air bubbles or gaps. Let your clubs sit about an hour after you have put on new grips before taking them to the driving range or playing a round of golf.

Tips and Warnings

  • Change your grips every 12 to 18 months.
