Gallstones can cause many complications such as pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and bloating. Gallstones can occur for a variety of reasons, such as rapid weight loss, a high fat diet and certain medical conditions such as gastroparesis which prohibits your stomach muscles from functioning. By consuming a low-fat diet, you can help offset some of these symptoms. If your gallstones are very painful or you begin to run a fever, call your doctor immediately. Your doctor may have a different diet plan in store for you along with certain medications.

Breakfast

Eating breakfast helps give you energy to start your day. Avoid foods that contain fats, cheeses, whole milk and fried foods. Foods that contain lots of fat and cholesterol worsens gallstones. Eat foods that are low-fat or fat-free to help relieve symptoms of gallstones and to help them pass. A healthy, low-fat breakfast for gallstones consists of a piece of fruit, such as a grapefruit or banana, whole wheat toast, cereal with skim milk and just enough jelly or margarine to cover your toast to add a little flavor, according to GICare.com. You may not be able to tolerate food very well if your gallstones are severe. In this instance, you may want to eat a very small breakfast, such as a banana and saltine crackers or a piece of toast.

Lunch

As long as you're able to tolerate foods, you may have a lean hamburger with mozzarella cheese, lettuce and tomato, according to GICare.com. Along with your lean hamburger, you can add a side of fruit salad, or a small bowl of vegetable soup. If you're unable to tolerate foods very well, skip the hamburger and only eat the vegetable soup, saltine crackers and fruit. Avoid eating fruit in heavy syrup. Don't overeat as this can make your gallstones worse. Pay extra attention to pain and nausea. If you're experiencing sharp pains or severe nausea, avoid eating foods that may be too heavy for your stomach to handle.

Dinner

Broiled, skinless chicken breasts along with any type of vegetable and a side of herbed rice is a low-fat dinner option, according to GICare.com. If you'd like, you may also have a dinner roll with 1 tbsp. of margarine, and a side of fruit. If your gallstones prevent you to eat a heavy meal, opt for a hard-boiled egg, fruit and a piece of toast or saltine crackers. Alternatively, you could choose a dinner salad topped with green peppers, tomatoes and cucumber with a low-fat or fat-free dressing.
