It is important to hang a heavy bag the correct way the first time. If it is not hung correctly, it could end up breaking things or hurting the person using it. Heavy bags weigh a lot to begin with. When they are subjected to a pounding from a boxer or martial artist, they carry tremendous force. You must hang a heavy bag so that it is both stable and free to swing.

Step 1

Find a good location for your heavy bag. It must be a place where it can swing free of obstacles, and where it will not be in the way. More importantly, it must be somewhere stable. This can be a heavy bag rack or a strong overhead support beam. The floor must also be strong if it is supporting the weight of a heavy bag rack. Consider the location carefully. Once a heavy bag is hung, it is difficult to move.

Step 2

Immobilize the heavy bag support. If you are hanging the heavy bag on a heavy bag rack, place at least 200 pounds of weight at the base. If you are using one of the larger 100 pound or 150 pound heavy bags, you need at least 400 pounds of weight at the base. If you are hanging the heavy bag from a beam, make sure it can support at least four times the weight of the bag itself.

Step 3

Attach the heavy bag chain to the support. If this is a heavy bag stand there will be an "S" shaped hook at the end of the rack where you can attach the chain. If this is a support beam you will need to wrap the chain over the beam. Loop the chain around the beam at least once so that it will not slide.

Step 4

Adjust the length of the chain. Find a spot about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the heavy bag. This spot should hang at the shoulder level of the person hitting the heavy bag. Measure the distance with a tape measure and make the chain the appropriate length.

Step 5

Ask a strong friend to help you hang the heavy bag. One of you will need to lift the heavy bag while the other stands on a chair or ladder to attach the chain. If you are using a 100 or 150 pound heavy bag, you may need several friends to help.

Things You'll Need
