Fishing in Destin Harbor has long been a tradition for both locals and guests alike. With large concentrations of tropical fish swimming in northwest Florida's clear blue waters, anglers are sure to find plenty to bite their lines. Location
Destin Harbor is tucked into a small inlet at the Gulf of Mexico entrance to Choctawhatchee Bay, where the Henderson Beach State Recreation Area meets downtown Destin. Destin Harbor is just two hours east of Mobile, Alabama, along U.S. Interstate 10 and Florida Highway 30. Just one hour east of Destin, is Panama City Beach, along Florida Highway 30.
Fish Species
The waters of the Gulf of Mexico feature a wide variety of fish species. Most abundant in the waters beyond Destin Harbor are sailfish, wahoo, cobia, marlin, bluefish, tarpon and mackerel. In all there are more than 20 species of edible fish to be caught in the waters off of Destin's beaches, more than most other spots along the coast. Year-round, seabed fishing focuses on red snapper, warsaw and triggerfish.
Seabed Composition
The shelf just beyond the Harbor drops off to nearly 100 feet in depth only 10 miles offshore, which gives fishermen embarking from Destin Harbor quick and easy access to deep sea angling. Most charter fishing companies begin their trolling roughly 27 miles off the coast and continue along Destin's East Pass.
Pier Fishing
There are several land-based areas to fish from in the Destin Harbor area. The 1,200 foot Okaloosa Pier provides plenty of day and night fishing. The 3,000 foot Destin Bridge Catwalk also offers visitors an ideal spot to cast their lines. The docks at Destin harbor and the Harbor Boardwalk also provide a perfect spot to fish on a warm afternoon.
Charter Fishing
You will also find a high concentration of charter fishing companies in Destin Harbor. A few popular boats include the Anastasia Charter Fishing Boat which uses a 65-foot charter boat, the Bounty Hunter Charter Boat equipped with a 50-foot fiberglass sportfisherman, the Charter Boat Phoenix and Harbor Walk Charter, offering four- to 12-hour charters.
