Fishing for halibut is a unique experience for all fisherman. The best time of the year to fish for Halibut in Alaska are the months of June, July and August. Experienced anglers will say that July and August are a bit better than June, but you can get larger halibuts in that month as well. The waters around the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula are at their warmest then and it makes for productive halibut fishing.

Most boat captains will not bring a halibut on board unless it is 50 pounds or more and average-sized halibut range between 80 and 120 pounds. It is not unusual to catch halibut that are 150 pounds or more and they will test the strength and endurance of any fisherman.
Bait
Halibut are very quick to react to the right bait. You need to use herring, squid, octopus and salmon heads if you want to hook big halibut. Once you drop your line in the water, you are likely to feel the halibut playing with it on the line before they make a play for it. Once you feel them going after your bait, you need to set the hook and then begin your battle to bring them on board.
