According to the Mayo Clinic, wrinkles are a natural symptom of aging. Skin tends to get thinner, less elastic and drier with age. As a result, lines, wrinkles and creases can develop on the surface of the skin. While some wrinkles are fine and unnoticeable, those around the eyes, neck and mouth may become deep and difficult to hide. Although there are a variety of medical procedures that can help eliminate wrinkles, there are many non-surgical methods that can be helpful.
Eat Fish
According to the Good Housekeeping magazine eating fish can help reduce wrinkles. Salmon and other cold-water fish are full of protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. The nutrients can nourish and plump up skin, helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Use Retinol
The Mayo Clinic explains that retinol can help remedy wrinkles. It is a compound of vitamin A that helps to neutralize unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals. These molecules break down skin cells and create wrinkles. Retinol is available in many over-the counter wrinkle creams and serums. Because vitamin A derivatives can be cause birth defects, it is important to avoid retinol if pregnant.
Consume More Soy
Soy-based foods and supplements can help improve the appearance of wrinkles. The soy bean is full of protein and amino acids that can help improve the firmness and texture of skin in as little as six months. It comes in a variety of foods such as milk, tofu, meat products, breads, meat substitutes and cereals.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient that can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. It is an ingredient in a variety of over-the-counter wrinkle creams. When used before exposure to the sun, the Mayo Clinic explains that it can even help prevent wrinkles and other effects of sun damage.
Use a Moisturizer
Dermatologist Robin Ashinoff in the Good Housekeeping magazine notes that a regular facial moisturizer can add moisture to the skin, making wrinkles and creases less noticeable. Look for a lotion that contains an emollient like mineral oil, petrolatum or lanolin. These ingredients can help fill up the gaps between skin cells, making wrinkles less noticeable. For facial wrinkles, pick a gentler water-based moisturizer that won't clog pores.
