How to Repair a Pro-Form Treadmill

ProForm produces a line of treadmills designed to provide an aerobic workout by allowing the user to walk or run in place. These devices use a motor unit to turn one of the walking belt's rollers, which causes the belt to rotate. Over time, the motor or belt installed in your treadmill may cease to operate properly; to correct the problem, you will have to partially disassemble the device and install a replacement component.

Preliminary Steps

Step 1

Stand to one side of the treadmill and slide the safety key into the console. Wait for the console to activate, then use the buttons labeled "Incline" to lower the end of the treadmill's deck to the ground.

Step 2

Pull the key from the treadmill, then kneel down next to the motor housing and switch the device's circuit breaker to the "off" position.

Step 3

Trace the treadmill's power cord to the electrical outlet. Grip the plug and disconnect the cord from the outlet.

Step 4

Locate and remove any screws installed on the top of the treadmill's motor housing, end caps and side rails. Tilt the treadmill over onto its side and examine the underside of the motor housing, end caps and side rails; remove any installed screws.

Step 5

Insert an Allen wrench into one of the bolts located at the end of the treadmill deck. Turn the bolt to loosen the walking belt; repeat with the remaining bolt, if necessary.

Step 6

Lift the motor housing, end caps and side rails free of the treadmill's base and set it aside. Return the treadmill to an upright position. Remove the bolts securing the rear roller to the treadmill's frame. Disengage the drive belt from the rear roller and motor.

Replacement Belt

Step 1

Remove the bolts securing the front roller to the treadmill's frame. Slide the front and rear rollers free of the belt.

Step 2

Remove the bolts securing the deck to the treadmill's frame. Lift the deck free of the treadmill. Slide the belt free of the deck, then install the replacement belt in its place. Apply a small amount of silicone lubricant between the deck and the belt.

Step 3

Bolt the deck back to the frame. Slide the front and rear rollers under the ends of the belt. Fit the drive belt over the rear roller and motor pulley. Bolt the ends of the rollers into place. Replace the motor housing, end caps and side rails and replace the removed screws. Use the Allen wrench to adjust the tension on the belt.

Replacement Motor

Step 1

Disconnect the cables attached to the motor. Remove the bolts securing the motor to the frame. Lift the motor free and set it aside.

Step 2

Install the replacement motor in the location previously occupied by the old motor. Bolt the new motor to the frame. Reconnect the motor cables. Fit the drive belt over the rear motor and motor pulley.

Step 3

Bolt the ends of the rear roller into place. Replace the motor housing, end caps and side rails and replace the removed screws. Use the Allen wrench to adjust the tension on the belt.
