Men'sStuff.org states there are over 100 types of human papillomavirus, or HPV, 30 of which may be associated with a penis viral infection. HPV is classified as low risk, as seen in genital warts, or high risk, that can cause abnormal cellular changes, such as in penile cancer. The virus can remain dormant for many years before symptoms appear. It notes that most HPV infections are harmless.

Sexual Contact

MayoClinic.com states that sexual contact may spread HPV infection to the genital area. This includes anal and oral sex and sexual intercourse. Viruses may manifest as warts on the penis or other lesions. Oral sex with partners who exhibit skin lesions in or around the mouth may also spread the virus to the penis.

Skin-to-Skin Contact

Skin-to-skin contact of the genital area may result in a penis virile infection. The virus may enter the body through a cut, abrasion or tear in the skin of the penis. MayoClinic.com notes skin-to-skin contact is the primary transport of the virus. Men'sStuff.org estimates over 20 million Americans have some type of HPV infection, as of 2010.

Risk Factors

According to MayoClinic.com, lifestyle, age and vulnerability of the immune system play large roles in acquiring HPV. Individuals having sex with more than one partner, or with someone who has multiple partners, increases the chance of genital viral infections. Those whose immune systems are compromised, such as with HIV/AIDS, are also at risk. It states that young men and adolescent boys are also more likely to get a viral infection probably due to increased sexual activity.
