Aluminum tubes
The basic material used to manufacture metal baseball bats aluminum tubes. The tubes are 2-to-3 inches wide and cut in lengths of 24 to 35 inches.
Forming the bat
The first forming process is a taper drawing operation, also known as ironing. Hydraulic pressure is used to push the tube through a die that gives it much of its bat formation. The formation of the handle occurs as two opposing dies rotate around the tube at speeds approaching 850 revolutions per minute ..
Heat treating
The bat is treated at 900 degrees for about 20 minutes. This makes the bat soluble to go into a solution that will harden and protect it from the elements. The bat is then capped, sealed and polished befor the manufacturer's labesl are put on the barrel of the bat.
