Montross is located in Westmoreland County in the Northern Neck region of Virginia, and offers a variety of assisted living options in proximity to Chesapeake Bay. Assisted living is an appropriate option for older people requiring daily assistance with personal care who want to continue living in a more independent environment. When searching for a suitable assisted living residence, it is important to consider issues such as quality of life, care standards, affordability and value.

Considerations

It is important to find a good match when selecting an assisted living facility. Both Essex House and The Orchard are within easy access of Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Consider the future needs of your senior loved one, and if the facility is able to meet them. It is important to note if the assisted living facility provides services for severe cognitive or physical impairments like Alzheimer's disease--especially if your loved one uses a ventilator or has a feeding tube. Talk to the residents of the facility, and observe the interaction between patients and staff. It may prove helpful to visit the facility unannounced and more than once. As always, review the state licensing reports on the assisted living facility.

Services

Most assisted-living facilities typically offer three meals a day, assistance with personal care as needed, wellness programs and shuttle buses. Depending on the facility, other services may include: health monitoring; cognitive impairment care; medication management; activities and entertainment; security; housekeeping and laundry. Taylor Farm Assisted Living is licensed to provide special services for residents with memory impairment. The level of care provided in assisted living communities varies, so it is important to research the services provided by each facility.

Environment

Both Washington & Lee Home for the Elderly and Essex House are smaller or micro senior communities. Many amenities exist in assisted living facilities. For instance, both The Orchard and Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury offer a beauty salon and barbershop as well as upscale dining rooms for their residents. Inhabitants of Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury can even enjoy an indoor heated pool.

Cost

When it comes to choosing an assisted living facility for your loved one, it is important to balance affordability and value. According to the Assisted Living Federation of America, the average monthly costs for a private one-bedroom apartment in an assisted living residence is $2,575 per month, but in Virginia that average increases to $4,710 per month. Primarily, seniors and their family pay the cost of assisted living. In addition, some families are able to cover a portion of their assisted living costs through financial assistance programs such as Medicaid, health insurance and long-term-care insurance.

Montross Facilities

There are many assisted living facilities located in the Montross, Virginia, area including: Washington & Lee Home for the Elderly, Essex House, Taylor Farm Assisted Living, The Orchard and Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury. Conflict Resolution

The State Long-Term Care Ombudsman works with residents and their families to address problems and concerns about assisted living facilities. The Code of Virginia grants the Long-Term Care Ombudsman access to a resident's records, and allows the Ombudsman to conduct appropriate interviews when formal complaints are made. This is a free service, and there are no eligibility requirements (see Reference section).
