Hybrid golf clubs have been a great boon for medium- and high-handicap golfers who have struggled with fairway woods and long irons. Hybrid clubs, which have a low center of gravity, allow the golfer to get the shot up in the air easily and do it without a big swing. Finding the right hybrid club can change a golfer's game dramatically.
Step 1
Choose a hybrid club that looks like a wood if you use fairway woods more frequently than you use long irons and you find yourself struggling with those shots. The hybrid wood is the club of choice on shots of 220 yards or more or when you have to hit from light or medium rough.
Step 2
Choose a hybrid club that comes closer to resembling an iron if you use long irons more frequently than you use fairway woods. If you find that the long iron is too unforgiving, than the hybrid iron is the correct club to use on shots of 180 yards or more, whether you are playing from the fairway or rough.
Step 3
Try a 20-degree hybrid if you want to get more distance on your fairway shots. Some golfers get anxious when they have a fairway shot because they are used to hitting from the rough. A golfer who has a 200-yard shot from the fairway has an excellent chance of hitting an accurate shot to the green with a relaxed and moderately paced swing.
Step 4
Use the utility/rescue club when you are facing a shot of 200 yards or more and you are in medium to heavy rough. This club is a first cousin of the hybrid club because of its low center of gravity. It gives the golfer a chance to get the club head through the heavy grass with speed and hit an accurate recovery shot.
Step 5
Take your hybrid clubs to the driving range before you use them in a match or a tournament. They are relatively easy to hit but they still take some getting used to because they are light weight. You will not want to overswing with your hybrid club.
Tips and Warnings
- A smooth, evenly paced swing is all you need with a hybrid. Don't try to overpower the ball or you will lose accuracy.
