Hula Hoop Techniques

In the 1960s, hula hoops were a popular form of child's play. However, as video and high-tech games took over from other toys, children gradually abandoned their beloved hoops. Then, in the late 1990s, the hula hoop was reborn as a piece of fitness equipment. While the hip twirling action is still used, fitness experts have developed some highly creative ways to use hula hoops as a fitness device.

Hoopilates

According to the American Council on Exercise, hybrid classes are the current rage. Most fitness instructors know that any class that uses the word Pilates is bound to attract a following. As such, many fitness professionals are literally jumping through hoops to create Pilates-evolved workouts. Hoopilates is by far the most creative. It uses the hula hoop to enhance the Pilates exercises. For example, the hoop can be held in both hands as a means of supporting upper body placement. Other exercises involve placing the legs inside the hoop.

Hoop Agility Ladder

If your hoop dreams include enhancing your athleticism, consider making a hula hoop agility course. You'll need to purchase more than one hoop, but they are relatively inexpensive. Simply line the hoops up in a pattern, and hop or jump from hoop to hoop. When you grow weary of merely jumping through hoops, take your homemade agility course outside, and line them up on a hill. Then, practice jumping up the hill and down the hill.

Double Hooping

Once you become proficient at single hooping, consider using two. Double hooping requires greater coordination and core strength. As such, it may burn more calories.

Arm Twirling

Place one hoop on each upper arm. Perform arm circles, and get ready for the circus!
