Acne scarring occurs when the blemishes leave behind dark spots or pits. According to website TeensHealth, mild acne scars may fade over time and the website recommends that you avoid picking or squeezing the acne pustules in order to avoid scarring. Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy," recommends several essential oils that have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and also improve lymphatic and blood flow to the skin. She recommends using these oils in three stages to treat existing scars and prevent future scarring. Full-strength essential oils can irritate the skin so always dilute essential oils with a base oil, such as grape seed.
Stage One Oils
The Stage One oils promote healing, reduce inflammation and correct oil imbalances in the skin. Valerie Ann Worwood suggests using these oils over a fourteen-day period by applying one day formula and two night formulas. The day formula combines chamomile German, palma rosa and yarrow in an almond oil base. To that, you would add chamomile Roman and carrot.
The first night formula uses carrot and chamomile German in a borage seed oil base. The second night formula combines rose and palma rosa as well as chamomile Roman and myrrh in a grapeseed oil base.
Stage Two Oils
The stage two oils fight infection and continue maintaining the oil balance in the skin. Stage two also lasts fourteen days and has day and night formulas as well as a vinegar rinse. The vinegar rinse uses lavender, eucalyptus and cider vinegar, and Worwood suggests using the rinse after you cleanse your face in the evening.
The day treatment uses eucalyptus radiata, clary sage and thyme. It also incorporates lavender and carrot blended all together in an almond oil base. The night treatment uses evening primrose, carrot and bergamot, as well as lavender, geranium and eucalyptus radiata in an almond oil base.
Stage Three Oils
Stage three is a six-week maintenance regimen with both day and night formulas. The day formula starts with neroli, fennel and geranium, followed by lemon and parsley in an almond oil base. The night formula starts with rose, violet leaf and carrot, followed by galbanum and lemon in an almond oil base.
