Dark spots and freckles are common, but that doesn't mean you have to ignore them. In fact, these markings are indicators of sun exposure and even sun damage. These spots might not cause everyone distress, but for some, they are not desirable. If you wish to get rid of your dark spots and freckles, take heart: You can. It just requires a bit of determination and persistence to attain the results you want.
Step 1
Cleanse your skin regularly with a mild face wash. Make sure it is free of harsh chemicals such as parabens or sodium lauryl sulfate so as to not cause skin irritation or sun sensitivity. Wash each morning and evening to remove dirt and oil and to prepare your skin for dark-spot-and-freckle removal.
Step 2
Dab lemon juice onto your dark spots and freckles once a day. Dip clean fingers into some lemon juice and apply it to your spots. Keep the juice away from your mouth and eyes. After the juice dries, rinse it off well. Over time, the juice lightens your dark spots and gives you a more even skin tone. If skin irritation develops, reduce application to every other day.
Step 3
Use hydroquinone on your dark spots and freckles. Purchase this cream over-the-counter in a mild formula with no more than a 2 percent concentration of hydroquinone. Apply the cream on clean skin, being sure to cover your freckles and dark spots only. After a few months, these marks should appear lighter. This treatment is not recommended for those with dark skin tones, as it could cause white spots and permanent pigment removal.
Step 4
Undergo laser treatment for your freckles and dark spots. You will need several sessions, which can be expensive, so discuss all your options, including financing, with your dermatologist. Should you opt for this procedure, your dermatologist will aim a laser at each dark spot and freckle to kill the pigment cells in that area. Over time, your skin tone will appear more even.
