A high estrogen level in the body is also known as estrogen dominance, and it can occur in both men and women. Not all cases of high estrogen levels are problematic. Some people aren't even aware that their levels are elevated, as symptoms may not be present.

Diet and Environment

When people consume plants with estrogen or are exposed to estrogen in the environment, their blood levels of estrogen increase. Plant estrogens, known as lignans, can be found in flaxseed, tea, fruits and vegetables. Grain products such as breads and rice also have lignans. Estrogenic chemicals also are in pesticides, fungicides and various metals, such as lead and mercury.

Internal Factors

Fat cells are a primary source of estrogen, and in obese people, the increased number of fat cells can increase the overall levels of estrogen. In women, another internal cause of high estrogen levels is peri-menopause, which beings about five to seven years before menopause. During this time, estrogen levels can become higher before they decrease drastically with menopause.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy may increase estrogen levels when prescribed for a menopausal woman. At menopause, estrogen levels decrease naturally. HRT is intended to bring estrogen levels back to the normal baseline, but it may elevate estrogen levels if not monitored closely by a health care provider.
