Though most medical experts--like Katherine Zeratsky at MayoClinic.com--will tell you that your liver does an efficient job of detoxing your body without any help, the idea that you should cleanse your liver from time to time has firmly taken root. While no diet or regimen that claims it is cleansing your liver is backed up by hard science, a day of eating healthy fruits and not adding new toxins to your body can be energizing.
Step 1
Prepare for your liver cleanse by consuming only organic apple juice, organic apples and filtered water for 24 hours. There is no scientific evidence to prove that this will have any effect on your liver, but apples contain fiber, vitamin C and natural sugars for energy, so a one-day fast should not cause you any harm.
Step 2
Wash six lemons and one grapefruit in warm water. Cut them in half.
Step 3
Squeeze the juice out of your lemons, either with a hand juicer or just by squeezing. Pour the juice through the strainer and into the blender, until you have 6 oz. to 8 oz. of fresh juice.
Step 4
Peel one half of your grapefruit and break it into sections. Put the sections into the blender.
Step 5
Add 8 oz. of cold, filtered water and 1 tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil into the blender and whirl it until you have a frothy liquid. Drink this immediately so that it doesn't have time to separate.
Step 6
Stay close to a bathroom during your cleanse, because the olive oil can act as a laxative. Snack on fresh fruits throughout the day, if you get hungry. Dr. Edward Group states on his Global Healing Center website that cherries, figs, kiwifruit, papaya, pears, plums and watermelons also support liver health.
Step 7
Drink between 32 oz. and 64 oz. of water during your cleanse to help keep you hydrated. Water helps your liver and kidneys do their jobs of processing and flushing away toxins.
Step 8
Make and drink another lemon/grapefruit concoction in the evening. Ease back into solid foods the next day with fresh fruits and juices, organic vegetables, vegetable soup and herbal teas.
