Major League Baseball is the pinnacle for professional baseball players. To get there, most players go through an apprenticeship that includes high school, college and minor league baseball. Nearly every player has to work his way to the major leagues, and the minors have four levels of development. It has a rookie league in addition to baseball at the A, AA and AAA levels. To play baseball at the minor league level, you must attract the attention of baseball scouts.
Step 1
Play baseball anytime you get an opportunity. If you are a high school baseball player and are offered the opportunity to play summer or American Legion baseball, take advantage of that chance. When you get an opportunity to play against an improved level of competition, take it every chance you get.
Step 2
Go to baseball skill development camps to improve. Even though you may be at the high school or college level, you can still benefit from going to development camps. You may get the tip you need that helps you get noticed by scouts. For example, you may be a fairly accomplished hitter, but when you see a curveball, you struggle. You may learn one or two things at a development camp that will help you hit a curveball with authority.
Step 3
Attend tryout camps to find where you stand. Many professional organizations hold large tryouts for players who have not previously been drafted. If you are talented and a savvy player, you may be able to impress the talent evaluators at the tryout. If you spark an interest, that could get you an opportunity to play minor league baseball.
Step 4
Develop the proper attitude and show your coaches you are willing to move to any position or try any job to help the team. This is important when trying to get an opportunity to play at the minor league level. For example, you may be a high school shortstop. However, if your coach asks you to play a few games at third base or center field, make the move. In addition to showing a cooperative attitude, you may show scouts that your versatility makes you a valuable player to have.
Step 5
Pay your dues. You may be motivated by the dream of playing in the major leagues with all the perks of the sport, but you have to do your time in the minor leagues. That means traveling by bus, staying in small motels and eating on the run. Hang in there and enjoy it.
