How to Get Rid of Discoloration Under Eyes

Discoloration under the eyes often comes in the form of dark circles which surround the eyes, though they may be most noticeable on the under side of the eye. Although discoloration under the eyes does not pose any serious health risks, it can pose a cosmetic problem for some people. Discoloration under the eyes can be caused by sleep deprivation, dehydration, congestion, excessive skin pigmentation, aging, genetics or other factors.

Step 1

Apply cucumber slices. Thin cucumber slices help lighten darkened skin when placed over the eyes. They also help cool and soothe eyes that have become dry or strained. Place the cucumber slices so that they are making contact with the skin under your eyes. Leave them on for between five and ten minutes for the optimal effect.

Step 2

Place damp tea bags over your eyes. Brew two cups of tea using tea bags; use either green or black tea. Once the tea has been brewed, squeeze out the teabags and let them cool. Squeeze out as much moisture as you can, as teabags which are too damp can cause tea to seep into your eyes, resulting in irritation. Place one under the skin of each eye. The caffeine that remains in the tea leaves may help excess fluid drain out of your eyes, which is why herbal tea is not generally recommended. One exception is chamomile tea, which has anti-inflammatory properties, DarkCirclesGone.com notes.

Step 3

Use almond oil. Almond oil is often used as a natural remedy for treating dark circles under the eyes. Mix equal portions of honey and almond oil. Massage this mixture into the area under your eyes each night before bed. Wash the area around your eyes in the morning so that the ointment does not stay on for too long, however.

Step 4

Sleep for longer periods of time. Getting more sleep can help prevent discoloration under the eyes, according to MayoClinic.com. Elevating your head with extra pillows can also help keep fluid from pooling around your eyes which can exacerbate eye discoloration.

Step 5

Use nasal rinses. Sinus congestion can also lead to eye discoloration because the congestion causes the veins which help drain fluid from the eyes to become dilated and abnormally dark. Nasal saline rinses, which can be applied using a neti pot, can help relieve nasal congestion and stop the area around the eyes from becoming dark.

Step 6

Take antihistamines. Antihistamines are recommended for patients who have nasal congestion and eye discoloration, as these help relieve the nasal congestion and keep blood from pooling under the eyes.

Step 7

Apply creams which can thicken the skin. The regular application of creams which have alpha-hydroxy acids or vitamins C and K around the eye area may help increase the thickness of the skin in those areas. Thickening your skin can help hide enlarged or darkened blood vessels which can cause the discoloration.
