The continent of Europe covers a huge area and a variety of geographical features. From the glacial landscapes of Scandinavia in the north to the Alps and Pyrenees further south and the great rivers of central Europe to the east, wherever you want to travel in that area, you will not be too far from a whitewater rafting site. You can find rivers to suit all abilities and most centers offer organized trips.
UK Rivers
The best rivers for whitewater rafting in the United Kindgdom are in Scotland, particularly in the central region of Perthshire. Splash White Water Rafting offers trips on the River Tay, departing from the town of Aberfeldy. The half-day trips include all equipment, transport on and off the river and a professional guide on each raft, so even beginners can feel safe. In the UK, whitewater rafting has become a popular activity for bachelor and bachelorette parties. Other venues can also be found in Ireland and Wales.
Scandinavia
Be prepared for cold water in the Scandinavian rivers, no matter what time of year you are visiting. The Sjoa River, in the Heidal area of Norway, is guaranteed to get you wet, with features named "The Washing Machine" and "Bye-Bye Baby" giving you an indication of the severity of the rapids and currents involved. In Iceland, the East Glacial River offers a challenge to even the most experienced rafters, and beginners are recommended to stick to organized excursions. Paddling the river is hard work, but worth it for the experience and the scenery you are passing through.
Alps
You can find many whitewater rafting rivers in the Alps, in either France, Switzerland or Austria. The Isere River in France is one of the most-visited rivers for water sports in the region, but summer is the best time for rafting. The stretch between Centron and Bourg St Maurice offers the most exhilarating experience. The Swiss River Simme offers a more gentle ride and is ideally suited for family and school trips. The smoother waters, while still providing some moments of excitement, give you the opportunity to enjoy the Alpine scenery as you paddle. The narrow Isel in Austria offers Class III and IV rapids and provides scary moments as you miss rocks by only inches through some parts of the ride.
Spain
The Minho River in Galicia is a tough river to ride in summer when the waters are at their peak and experienced guides are recommended. However, when the water level is lower, the river can be a pleasant first ride for rafting beginners. Also in Galicia, the Ullo River is full of waterfalls and bends and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Meanwhile, the Ebro is a top whitewater rafting river in Spain, offering a calmer ride for beginners and families, with the odd moment of excitement as you progress towards the Mediterranean Sea.
Eastern Europe
Tourism is becoming big business in the former East European countries, and many have rivers that are suited to whitewater rafting and other water sports. The Olt River in Romania has something for everyone, from beginners to experienced rafters; some stretches of the rivers remain calm and smooth, while others have Class IV rapids. In Bulgaria, the Struma River is best tackled by those with experience as most of the rafting stretches are full of fast currents and rapids.
