A growing trend toward organic mattresses offers sensitive sleepers allergen-free and injury-free sleep. Volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde, used in the processing of conventional mattresses can be irritating to those with chemical sensitivities. Conversely, the materials and design used in organic mattresses may provide high-quality sleep that is orthopedically safe and supportive, and many chiropractors recommend them for their patients.

Savvy Rest

Savvy Rest is endorsed by chiropractor Bruce Short, owner and founder of ReCharge Wellness. This mattress is constructed from three 3-in. layers of natural latex, in customized combinations of soft, medium and/or firm. The organic cotton casing has organic wool batting quilted inside. Organic sheep's wool is stitched into place to prevent shifting of the fabric and wool layers. The wool maintains comfortable body temperature in a wide range of external temperatures and also promotes a cool, dry environment that repels dust mites, helping to ensure high quality, restful sleep. The combination of rubber core and wool padding evenly distributes body weight, minimizing pressure on the back and joints. The mattress can be customized on each side, for couples, and can be made to any dimension or shape.

Royal Pedic

Latex rubber for Royal Pedic mattresses is manufactured by mixing small rubber particles in a liquid form, which is then molded into shape. Medium, firm and extra firm choices are available. The latex core is surrounded by organic Peruvian cotton fabric and then organic French wool is quilted onto the fabric. The needle punching process compresses the French wool to eliminate unwanted loft in the wool, which minimizes body imprints in the mattress and provides better uniform consistency in mattress comfort. This needle-punching process also provides a degree of chemical-free fire retardancy. The box spring is designed to have 50 percent more coils in the center, where pressure demands are greatest, according to Dr. Reed Philips.

BioPosture

These mattresses are made of memory foam in either 10-in. or 12-in. thicknesses. The memory foam material is made of plant-based oils, without halogens, formaldehyde or latex. It is the most open-celled foam available, according to the company, allowing for ideal heat exchange and sleeping comfort, with less compaction than other types of memory foam. A patented 7 Zone Neutral Support System is purported to ensure proper spinal alignment. The mattress is covered with bamboo ticking that has hypo-allergenic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. Each mattress is made when ordered, eliminating the need for warehouse storage and also eliminating the need for flame retardant chemicals, a consideration for chemical sensitive individuals. Louis Bisogni, D.C., endorses these mattresses and is on the professional advisory board for this company.
