Wrinkles and sagging skin are a natural part of the aging process. The skin becomes thinner, less elastic and more vulnerable to damage, which causes fine lines and creases in the skin. According to MayoClinic.com, smoking, sun exposure and genetics all contribute to wrinkles and sagging skin. Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy," recommends several oils that maintain elasticity, firm the skin and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin as they are irritating, especially to the delicate skin around the eyes. Always mix essential oils with a carrier oil, such as vitamin E or jojoba.
Oils for the 20s
While people in their 20s generally have smooth, firm, skin, they can benefit from some preventative maintenance. Valerie Ann Worwood suggests a blend of neroli, lavender and fennel as well as chamomile german, geranium and carrot. These oils will help maintain the skin's natural elasticity and prevent premature aging.
Oils for the 30s
By their 30s, some people may notice the beginnings of fine lines on the forehead and around the mouth and eyes. Worwood suggests a blend of yarrow, patchouli and palma rosa as well as clary-sage and fennel with rose and carrot. These oils will help hide the initial signs of aging.
Oils for the 40s
During the 40s, the lines may become deeper and the skin looser and less elastic. The loss of elasticity may be most noticeable around the mouth and chin---creating a "jowl" effect. Worwood suggests a blend of neroli, lavender, and frankincense with rosemary, fennel and lemon. She also suggests adding carrot to the mix. These oils will help firm the skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Oils for 50 Plus
At 50 and beyond, the skin may be very thin with very little elasticity. Lines may be very deep and other areas may have a crepe-paper-like appearance. Worwood suggests a blend of violet leaf, galbanum and rose with neroli, lavender and mryyh. She also suggests adding carrot and bois de rose to the mix. These oils should help firm the skin and restore some elasticity.
