The raspberry plant, botanically known as Rubus idaeus, is best known for its fruit. It is a biennial plant native to many parts of Europe. The leaves have been used throughout history for tea. The tea is called red raspberry leaf, and is known to be beneficial during pregnancy, especially if it's organic. Note that even though raspberry leaf tea has widespread use, the Food and Drug Administration has not proven herbal remedies effective.

For Pregnancy

According to the American Pregnancy Association, red raspberry leaf tea is an iron-rich plant that is likely safe to consume during pregnancy. Most pregnancy tea blends use red raspberry leaf in their formulas. It is said to tone the uterus and increase milk production. It may also relieve labor pains and alleviate nausea. Health-care providers suggest using this tea after the first trimester. Author Susun Weed explains that raspberry leaf contains fragrine, an alkaloid that gives tone to the pelvic region, therefore helping the uterus. She also claims it prevents miscarriage and postpartum hemorrhage because of its benefits on the uterus. It also encourages the uterus to let go and work in a more relaxed state, allowing the contracting uterus to be more effective during the birthing process, according to Weed.

For Diarrhea

The University of Maryland Medical center claims that raspberry tea is helpful for alleviating diarrhea. Diarrhea occurs when the bowels increase production in a watery and frequent state. Organic raspberry tea may dry out the intestines since it has astringent properties.

For the Blood and Connective Tissues

Because organic raspberry tea is so rich in iron, it is said to be very beneficial to the blood. In her book "Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health," Rosemary Gladstar claims the tea is used to restore iron-poor blood and may help with anemia, or other low-energy symptoms, when combined with nettle tea. She also writes that it is rich in niacin and among the highest sources of the trace mineral manganese, which helps the body produce connective tissue and bone cartilage.

Other Benefits

Gladstar also writes that raspberry tea can help with excessive menstruation. In addition, due to its astringent properties, the tea may relieve infected gums and is therefore an effective mouthwash. Because it is rich in numerous vitamins and minerals, it is also good for a general nutritive tonic, or when recovering from illness and energy is low.
