If you want diets that help you lose the weight and keep it off, you should avoid of fad diets. These diets typically restrict too many foods or ask you to consume a very low number of calories each day. Instead, look for diets that recommend you make permanent changes to your lifestyle and emphasize better food choices.

Volumetrics

This diet is listed as one of the top picks for weight loss plans, according to U.S. News and World Report. The premise of the diet is that you should choose low calorie foods that you can eat a lot of in order to feel full. The foods consumed on the diet are nutritious and include fish, lean cuts of meat, low fat dairy products, beans, skinless poultry and whole grain breads.

Glycemic Index Diet

The Glycemic Index Diet is recommended by "Forbes Magazine" as being one of the more effective diets. The basis of the diet is that you choose foods that do not spike your blood sugar level. Low glycemic index foods take longer to digest and leave you feeling full longer. Foods with a high glycemic index level should be avoided---such as white bread, instant rice, baked potatoes and bagels. Low glycemic index foods allowed on the diet are vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grain breads, brown rice and whole grain pasta.

Weight Watchers

Another choice recommended by U.S. News and World Report is Weight Watchers. This points-based system for weight loss emphasizes making low calorie food choices and controlling portion sizes. You attend meetings for weight loss support and are given customized meal and exercise plans while on the diet.

The Zone

The Zone Diet is another eating plan recommended by "Forbes Magazine." Your aim is to eat 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fats and 30 percent proteins to keep insulin levels in the body regulated. Although you need to control portions and monitor your food choices, there are no forbidden foods on the diet.
