Changing an official name after marriage is easy with your certified marriage certificate. Some states, such as New York, allow an official name change on the marriage license form, but that means only that you can begin legally using your new name immediately after marriage. You will still need to change it on other documentation. In other states, you will not be able to use your married name legally until after you have officially changed it. Check with the clerk of court for your state's rules. Regardless of state, you will need proof of identity and citizenship to change an official name after marriage.
Change Your Name With the Social Security Administration
Step 1
Obtain and complete form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, which allows you to apply for an original or replacement card and to change or correct information. The form is available at Social Security Online or at your local Social Security office.
Step 2
Gather the required documentation -- your certified marriage certificate -- showing both your old and new names. If it has been more than two years since your marriage, you must also provide documentation that proves your identity in the prior name. If you were born outside the United States, you must also provide proof of US citizenship or "current lawful work-authorized status."
Step 3
Take or mail the Social Security card application and the required documentation to any Social Security office. The application provides a website address with office locations. You will receive the card with your married name in about a week or two. The SSA will also mail your original documentation back to you.
Change Your Name in Other Venues
Step 1
Change your name on your driver's license. Many states require you to first change your name on your Social Security card. Present the new Social Security card, along with your certified marriage certificate to obtain a driver's license with your married name.
Step 2
Use your driver's license and Social Security card to change your name with your employers, banks, insurance companies, utility companies, and other creditors.
Step 3
Order two or three copies of your certified marriage certificate so you will have proof of legal name change available to present or mail if needed.
