How to Play Football Better

It's possible to play football better by developing your agility and dedicating yourself to improving certain aspects of your game. Coaches often design practice drills to develop offensive and defensive player's techniques. Team drills can be augmented with personal training drills to improve balance and footwork. In addition, studying to improve your understanding of the game should be ongoing throughout the season.

Improving your agility and skills gives you confidence, which translates into an ability to react instinctively in games. Instincts are one of the intangibles that separate the average player from a standout football player.

Step 1

Conduct the carioca shuttle drill to improve your balance and footwork. Backpedal five yards, rotate your hips to the right and cross your left leg over so you're running sideways with your hips facing to the right. Return to the backpedal position and rotate your hips to the left, cross your right leg over and run sideways with your hips facing left. Conduct the drill 10 times every day.

Step 2

Run timed sprints and track your progress. Set a goal with the intention of taking one full second off your 100-yard dash time within a calendar month. Use resistance training methods as you run sprints to build leg muscles and improve quickness.

Step 3

Play harder. Dig down and find more intensity when you're blocking or tackling. Keep your eyes on the target and your legs moving when you make contact. Run precise passing routes as if they were drawn with a ruler or a T-square. Carry the football as if it were a treasure to be protected. Hit someone on every play.

  • Set reasonable achievement goals and do not over-train.
