Fruits and vegetables contain a variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fiber, the CDC reports. Your body uses the nutrients for proper development and function. Each fruit and vegetable offers a distinct set of nutrients. The more variety in your fruit and vegetable consumption, the more nutrients you include in your diet. Eating a variety of color in produce also increases the variety of nutrients received.

Most supermarkets offer a variety of produce year-round. The produce selection allows you to get a range of flavors and textures, as well as uses in the kitchen. Local farmers markets extend the selection available, typically during the warmer months. Variety in the produce selection available provides access to several nutrients, but it also keeps you interested in eating the healthy fruits and vegetables.

Balancing fruit and vegetable consumption with other healthy diet components, such as whole grains and lean proteins, offers the body well-rounded nutrition. In-season produce provides the best flavor and is often the most affordable, allowing you to enjoy the benefits without spending a fortune.
