Corolla is on the north end of North Carolina's Outer Banks region. It rests on a sandy east coast peninsula and is host to acres of wildlife preserves, wild horse territory and marshland. The shallow channels of water that navigate the Currituck Sound allow for premium kayaking, wildlife viewing and fishing.
Local Sights
The sandy beaches are a good reason to visit Corolla. The town is also home to a historic lighthouse. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was erected December 1, 1875, and is one of a handful of historic buildings on site. North of Corolla sits a 7,544-acre wild horse sanctuary. Wild mustangs wander the beaches of the Outer Banks at the Corolla Wild Horse Fund sanctuary.
Guided Tours
Kayak Corolla is an outfitter and adventure company that offers guided tours of Corolla's back country. The Four Wheel Drive and Kayak Expedition takes visitors first on a 15-mile off road vehicle ride where guests can view shore birds and learn the ecology of the area. You'll visit Penny's Hall, the second largest sand dune on the east coast before hopping in the kayaks and paddling to a private 70-acre wild horse sanctuary. Coastal Kayak is another touring company; their Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary Tour is of the northern Outer Banks just west of Corolla. The Audubon Sanctuary is a vast marsh full of secluded water trails. The company has partnered with the Sanderling Spa and Resort for access to some of the least traveled water of this area. The solitude of this trip makes the wildlife viewing spectacular. Both of these tours come with full outfitting and equipment for the entire family. For guests coming to see the lighthouse, there is a kayak tour offered by Kitty Hawk Kites in Outer Banks. The Corolla Lighthouse and Whalehead Club Kayak Tour takes guests along the historically rich Northern Beaches of the area up to the Currituck Lighthouse.
Kayak Rental
Ocean Atlantic Rentals has a location in Corolla. They rent kayaks, kayak wheel carts, backrests, wetsuits, boots, gloves and life jackets for all ages. All kayak rentals include life vests and paddles; you can rent them by the week or day. Kitty Hawk Kites has two locations in Corolla. They are primarily a kite surfing outfitter. They also rent new and used kayaks, skirts, replacement paddles and anchors. They have life jackets, dry bags and kayak fishing rod holders available for purchase.
Fishing
Separate fishing licenses are required in North Carolina both for freshwater and saltwater fishing. Striped bass migrate to their wintering grounds every year here in the Outer Banks; kayak fishing for bass is a popular winter activity. Kayaking allows anglers to go where people usually cannot go and fish shallow waters in the process. Kitty Hawk offers guided kayak fishing tours of the area's shallow sounds to hunt for red drum and rockfish.
Mothership Kayaking
Mothership Kayaking has opened up new waters for paddlers. A bay boat can be hired to transport kayaks and kayakers to remote locations they would otherwise be unable to fish. The Outer Banks Fishing School offers kayak excursions for advanced anglers hoping to catch tarpon, drum, flounder and trout.
