About Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon Lapel Pins

Pink ribbon lapel pins symbolize the fight for researchers to find a cure for breast cancer. Many people wear these pins, especially during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Some people wear the pink ribbon lapel pin as a survivor of the disease, while and others wear the pin in support of a beloved spouse, friend or relative who has had breast cancer. The pin may also show general support in the fight against breast cancer.

History of the Pink Ribbon Pin

Pink ribbons as pins were first used to symbolize the fight against breast cancer at the June 1990 Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure" in New York City, according to Pink Ribbon International. This event brings together breast cancer survivors and people who support the cause to raise funds for breast cancer research. After this event the pink ribbon pin became a symbol of breast cancer events and of the ongoing efforts to raise funds for research to cure this disease.

Join the Pink Ribbon Team

The American Cancer society reports that "One in eight women will have breast cancer; most are older than age 50 at diagnosis." Thus almost everyone knows a woman (or man) who has had breast cancer. This disease is endemic in America. This is why the pink ribbon breast cancer lapel pin is very popular and is used to raise funds for breast cancer research and for patient education programs.

Pink Ribbon Pins and October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this month many stores have displays that sell pink ribbon pins and clothing and other items adorned with the symbol. Typically a percentage or all of the profits from the sale of these items goes to funding breast cancer research. Everything from packages of M&Ms to toasters are adorned with the symbol of the pink ribbon or made entirely in the color pink.

Worldwide Recognition of Pink Ribbon Lapel Pins

The pink ribbon lapel pin movement started in America, but it has spread worldwide. The pink ribbon pin is often seen during events where large crowds gather and also at events around the world to raise funds for breast cancer research.

How to Purchase Pink Ribbon Lapel Pins

Many department stores and online jewelry stores sell pink ribbon lapel pins. Also, cancer research foundations like the Susan G. Komen Foundation sell the pins and many other items containing this symbol on their website (see Resources).
