Overview

Makeup application is an art, and with a little practice you can have your makeup looking flawless. To get your makeup to appear as if you had it applied by a makeup artist, you may want to follow a routine some professionals use. Using the right makeup tools and choosing makeup colors that look best on you will also give you outstanding results.

Step 1

Preparation of Face for Makeup Application

Wash your face and use toner to remove all dirt. Apply moisturizer and blot off excess with a tissue. Make sure eyebrows are neat in appearance and have no stray hairs. Pluck out any stray hairs using tweezers, and cut long eyebrow hairs with a pair of small, blunt-edged scissors.

Step 2

Concealer and Foundation

Examine your face for blemishes and dark circles under the eyes, and dab concealer over these areas using your index finger. Smooth the concealer out evenly. Dip cosmetic sponge into cup of water with moisturizer and squeeze it out. Squeeze it again, this time with a tissue wrapped around it. Apply foundation to face using gentle sweeping movements until all but the lips are covered in foundation. Apply additional foundation to dark areas.

Step 3

Mineral Makeup Powder and Blush

Use mineral makeup powder to cover the foundation. Dip your powder brush into the mineral makeup powder and gently tap brush to remove excess powder. Use long, gentle sweeping movements to distribute powder evenly over the face and to cover the foundation. Take your cotton pad and wet it and squeeze out any excess water. Blot the skin lightly with the cotton pad to complete the process. Sweep blusher brush across blush powder and shake off any excess powder. Stroke color on cheekbones, up and in the direction of the temples.

Step 4

Eye Shadow and Eyeliner

Cover cotton swab with eye shadow and apply eye shadow to the top eyelid using sweeping movements. Eye shadow should stop at the crease in the eyelid. Cover a clean cotton swab with brown eye shadow and apply a thin line of color along crease. Cover another clean cotton swab with ivory eye shadow and apply color to area under the eyebrow to highlight the eyes. Dip your eyeliner brush into the liquid eyeliner and brush off excess. Draw a thin line next to the top lashes, and taper the line off at the end corner to create a winged effect.

Step 5

Eyebrow Powder and Pencil

Brush eyebrow powder onto eyebrows using your eyebrow brush. Fill in any bald spots with your eyebrow pencil by making short strokes with the pencil. Follow the natural line of the eyebrows to avoid giving the eyebrows a made-up look.

Step 6

Mascara and Lip Color

Curl lashes using your eyelash curler and apply a coat of mascara to them. Wait a minute or two for the mascara to dry, and then brush on another coat of mascara to make the lashes look thicker. Apply lip pencil to outside of lips, following the natural line of the lips. Add color to the area inside the penciled line using your lip brush. Absorb excess lip color with a tissue.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use face powder that has no color so the color of the foundation can show through.
