According to the "Los Angeles Times," "Fitness boot camps may be one of the fastest ways to go from zero to fit." For many women who are juggling work and family responsibilities, it can be hard to find the time to take care of health and fitness. Thus, many women turn to more intense fitness routines, such as weight loss boot camps, to help them lose weight quickly and get in shape. Fortunately, for ladies in New Hampshire, there are many weight loss boot camp to choose from.
History
Weight loss boot camps originated from the physical training given to military recruits. This training was not only designed to get soldiers into top shape physically, but also to psychologically train them for high-stress situations and to work as a team. Starting in the 1980s, boot camps became a popular method for rehabilitating juvenile delinquents and prisoners. During the past 10 years, boot camps for weight loss have become popular among women as an effective way to tone their physiques and lose weight.
Typical Class
During the first class, simple weight and body measurements are taken. Classes are usually held outdoors and in the mornings. The main focus of the classes are on a variety of whole-body exercises that don't need equipment, such as running, obstacle course racing, hiking, weight resistance training, yoga, and pilates. Boot camps can range from very intense and Spartan to a luxurious, spa atmosphere.
Benefits
Health benefits include weight loss, increased muscle strength, flexibility, increased energy and self-esteem. Cedric Brant, chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise, says "It's a very efficient workout because you're working your whole body in a short period of time." Additionally, the supportive, group mentality of an all-women group helps to create an especially motivating atmosphere.
Locations
Boot camps are located all over New Hampshire and clustered near the larger towns and cities. A popular choice is the New Hampshire Adventure Boot Camp with locations in Bristol, Plymouth, and Ossipee. This boot camp features a four-week long program of either five days per week or four days per week for a one-hour class in the morning.
Another option is to join a gym, such as Underwood's Sports and Fitness, with locations all over New Hampshire, which has a fitness boot camp class. This fitness boot camp features eight-week sessions with the option of taking one or two one-hour classes per week. Both New Hampshire Adventure Boot Camp and the Underwood's Sports and Fitness are non-residential and don't include other services.
Cost
Classes are usually one hour and bought in one-month packages. The prices range from about $10 per class to $50 per session, depending on the length and type of the class.
