Hockey is an exciting fast-paced game that can be played on an ice rink, a grass field or a concrete street or court. The game has existed in a basic form for around 4,000 years and was commonly known as the "ball and stick" game and was played in a variety of countries including Rome, Scotland, Egypt and South America. Street hockey is a common and relatively cheap version of hockey, as all you really need are skates, a stick, a ball and a goal. New skates can be painful to wear, but breaking them in is a piece of cake.
Breaking in Roller Hockey Skates
Step 1
The simplest way to break in new skates, whether roller skates or ice skates, is to use them. The boots in these skates are supposed to be stiff to give your ankles extra support and skating around in them will help break them in.
Step 2
If you choose to skate around in your new roller skates to break them in, make sure you wear a long pair of athletic socks. Not wearing socks will not only hurt your feet, but the foot moisture will cause your boots to smell and will also damage the leather over time.
Step 3
Try skating around your driveway or street until your boots feel comfortable on your feet. If you want to speed up the process of breaking in your skates, try heat fitting them in addition to wearing them.
Heat Fitting Roller Skates
Step 1
Preheat the oven to about 180 degrees F.
Step 2
Remove wheels and turn off the oven once it reaches 180 degrees.
Step 3
Place the wheel-less skates on a baking sheet and place in the oven.
Step 4
Leave the skates in the oven until the inside of the boots are soft enough to mold to your foot, but don't leave them in for longer than 10 minutes.
Step 5
Take the boots out and put them on your feet. Since you turned the oven off, the boots shouldn't be too hot to put on your feet, but if they are let them cool for a minute or two until they're comfortable to wear. Remember to wear a pair of thick socks, and lace the boots up tightly.
Step 6
Leave the boots on your feet for about 15 minutes, take them off, and let them cool and harden for about 24 hours.
Tips and Warnings
- When you're breaking your skates in by wearing them, remember to wear tight-fitting socks without any wrinkles, as loose socks can cause blisters and rashes on your feet and legs.
- Make sure to wear the proper safety equipment when playing hockey, especially on concrete. Broken bones, teeth, and head injuries can happen if the proper precautions aren't used.
