B12 is a water-soluble vitamin the body requires for many tasks. B12 is necessary for the production of red blood cells, the formation of DNA and for the proper function of the neurological system. It not only is required for the formation and proper function of the neurological system, but also serves to aid in the maintenance of the red blood cells and nerve cells. Proper brain function requires the presence of B12. Consult your doctor before adding a B12 or any other supplement to your diet.

Side Effects of B12

While most people don't see any side effects from taking B12, there are some cases. Side effects include diarrhea, feeling of swelling over the entire body and blood clots in the legs. Some people report itching, skin rashes, insomnia, chest pain, anxiety and breathing problems. Side effects can vary in intensity and do not occur for all patients, but you should be aware of them.

Allergic Reaction to B12

Allergic reactions can occur when taking B12 supplements or receiving B12 injections from your physician. The allergic reaction is typically due to an allergy to the presence of cobalt metal that is part of the B12 vitamin. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching, hives or a rash, swelling of the lips, mouth and throat and wheezing or difficulty breathing. Some sources report these as simple side effects, while others classify them as allergic reactions.

Toxicity of B12

Toxicity of B12 is rare when the only sources are from food and supplements. When your physician prescribes B12 shots, the blood level of B12 may rise to a level that can be termed toxic. Toxic levels of B12 can cause your body to produce an overabundance of red blood cells to be produced and released into the blood stream. This can lead to blood problems, such as clotting of the blood within the blood vessels. One of the effects of B12 is to activate cell division. Too much B12 has been linked to the development of cancer in some patients. B12 treats some forms of anemia; however, these treatments may result in the development of certain forms of cancer --- namely, leukemia and prostate cancer. Toxic levels of B12 can also cause hair loss and severe emotional disturbances.
