Candidiasis is an infection caused by an overgrowth of candida yeast on the skin and mucous membranes. Children and adults can suffer from candida yeast infections, although children usually recover more quickly than do adults. Caused by antibiotic and steroid medications, as well as a weakened immune system, it is important for parents to recognize candida symptoms. Candidiasis is easily treatable, although treatment will depend on the location of the infection.
Skin Rash
The most common sign of candida in young children is a severe diaper rash that can include raised pus-filled red lesions with well-defined edges. According to Children's Hospital Boston, these lesions can easily spread to the stomach, thighs or the scrotum in boys.
Parents can treat candida yeast infections with topical anti-fungal creams, while making efforts to keep the diaper area dry. Exposing a baby's bottom to air for 15- minute intervals several times throughout the day can accomplish this.
White Film
Doctors call a candida infection of the mouth oral thrush. The chief symptom of thrush, according to CandidaSupport.org, is a white patchy film over the mouth, lips or tongue. Parents can treat oral thrush with an oral antifungal medication, and breastfeeding mothers should apply this antifungal medication to their breast to prevent passing the yeast infection back and forth.
Behavioral Problems
According to the National Candida Center, when yeast infections like candida go untreated, it can begin to impact a child's behavior. Symptoms can include violent outbursts, a lack of self-control and even hyperactivity.
