Ayurveda, India's ancient medicinal practice, provides home remedies for many common ailments. Ayurveda in Sanskrit means "life" and "science" and offers a holistic approach to medicine. In addition to treating headaches, the common cold, and indigestion, Ayurvedic medicine provides home remedies for relief from itching.
Lemon Juice and Coconut Oil
To reduce the inflammation and itching, apply a mixture of lemon juice and coconut oil to the affected area and allow to dry. Lemon, with its properties of an antiseptic, can quickly turn an acidic condition into an alkaline one, thereby relieving itching. Coconut oil is also effective for skin conditions that cause itching and can be applied topically with lemon juice. It is the 8 percent caprylic acid in coconut oil that is effective for the itching. Coconut oil is even more effective as a preventative measure against itching when significant quantities are in the diet. Coconut oil helps the body to form a protective layer on the skin as the oils are released throughout the day, forming a protective barrier that inhibits microbes.
Neem Leaf
Neem, also known as "Indian neem" (margosa tree), means "reliever of sickness" in the ancient Sanskrit. Neem has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes, including the treatment for itching. The neem leaf, in particular, is beneficial for relieving pain and inflammation caused by itching due to its anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Boil neem leaves in water and apply warm solution to the affected area. Neem oil can also be applied to relieve itching.
Babul (Acacia Arabica)
The babul tree (Acacia arabica), common in the Indus River valley of Pakistan, is useful in home remedies for itching. With its astringent and nutritive properties, babul can be an effective way to stop the itching. The bark can be boiled in water and the fumes applied to the affected area to relieve pain and swelling.
Holy Basil
Holy basil, native to India and Southeast Asia, contains high amounts of eugenol which has anesthetic and antibacterial properties. Prepare a tea with holy basil and spray onto the affected area. You can also place two holy basil leaves in a jar of hot water until it cools. Apply the solution to the affected area to relieve the itch.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar, a natural antiseptic and antifungal, is beneficial in treating itchy skin due to its ability to destroy harmful germs. In addition to apple cider vinegar containing healthful enzymes, it is acidic which can help restore the skin's natural acidity. Restoring the skin's natural pH level improves the itchy condition. Apple cider vinegar can either be added to a lukewarm bath or sprayed directly onto the affected area.
