When you decide to lose weight and set a weight-loss goal, you must decide how to keep track of your progress. You can simply record the number of pounds you lose or you can calculate the percentage of body weight loss. Percentage weight loss is the amount of weight lost expressed as a proportion, or percentage, of your starting weight.
Step 1
Weigh yourself on a scale the day you start your weight-loss program. Record your weight in some way, such as in a food diary.
Step 2
Weigh yourself on a regular schedule, such as once each week. It's best to do this at the same time of day. This offsets weight variations caused by the amount of food and drink consumed each day.
Step 3
Subtract your current weight from your starting weight. If you started at 160 pounds and your current weight is 144 pounds, subtract 144 from 160. The difference of 16 pounds is the amount of body weight you have lost.
Step 4
Divide the amount of body weight you have lost by your starting weight. If you've lost 16 pounds and started with a body weight of 160 pounds, you divide 16 by 160 to get 0.10. Multiply this figure by 100 to convert to your percentage body weight loss to 10 percent.
