Parkinson's disease is a condition that affects the nervous system--primarily, the function of movement. Initially, the patient may notice small tremors in his muscles. Yet, over time, more-pronounced tremors, a diminished ability to hold facial expressions or muffled speech may develop. In addition to following a recommended treatment plan, monitoring the intake of certain foods can keep a patient's symptoms under control.
Step 1
Eat fruits and vegetables each day. Constipation is a prevalent symptom for patients who suffer from Parkinson's disease. According to MayoClinic.com, fiber is one of the most helpful ways to treat or prevent this symptom. Many fruits and vegetables provide a good source of fiber. Patients should avoid eating too many starchy fruits, such as bananas, because they can actually contribute to constipation.
Step 2
Incorporate whole grains as a regular part of a daily diet. In addition to fruits and vegetables, whole grains provide a natural form of fiber. Multigrain rice or oatmeal are good sources of whole grains. A variety of whole grain breads can provide significant sources of whole grains. However, patients should pay attention to how much bread they eat, as too much bread can exacerbate constipation.
Step 3
Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered healthy fats. Nuts and seeds, such as walnuts and flaxseeds, beans, such as navy beans and kidney beans, fish and olive oil, are all recommended sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
Step 4
Monitor the intake of dairy products to prevent the onset of severe Parkinson's symptoms, states Reuters. It is not necessary to avoid them. However, a patient should work with his treating physician to determine the appropriate amount of dairy products he should consume each day.
Step 5
Drink plenty of water to support adequate hydration and to help prevent constipation. Drinking a minimum of eight 8 oz. glasses of water supports overall good health. Patients with Parkinson's disease or patients who suffer from constipation should drink additional water.
