For men, shaving your face every day can become a tiresome practice, but it is necessary to maintain a well-groomed appearance. The same can be said for women and their leg and under-arm areas. And both sexes also deal with hair growth in other areas where noticeable hair is considered unappealing. If you've been wanting to ditch the razor, though, there are a few ways of stopping hair growth at least temporarily if not for good.

Electrolysis

Talk to your doctor about electrolysis. In this procedure, a thin needle is inserted into individual hair follicles to destroy them by using either heat or chemicals. Although no hair removal treatment has been proven permanently effective, it is the only treatment sanctioned by the Food and Drug administration for permanent hair removal. But keep in mind, electrolysis is considered far more effective on dark hair, so if you have light coloring, you might consider another option.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser it off. In laser hair removal, a high-powered light beam is used to burn selected follicles and reduce hair growth in those areas. The treatment, used widely since the 1970s, is accepted by the FDA for "permanent hair reduction," but not permanent removal.

If you choose this option, do your homework on potential providers. Laser removal business is booming, so naturally, the quality and effectiveness of the work will widely vary depending upon the person you hire.

Vaniqa

Ask your dermatologist for Vaniqa, a prescription medication that promises to slow hair growth steadily beginning eight weeks after your first application. Vaniqa is the only FDA-approved product geared toward slowing facial hair growth in women. It works by stopping enzymes that lead to hair growth.

Apply it thinly to affected areas after washing your face and before using any moisturizers, makeup or sunscreen. The company suggests that your applications should be eight hours apart, so using it in the morning and before going to bed is most practical.
