Herbs are frequently used as dietary supplements. While the diet industry would have you believe that there are plenty of miraculous herbs out there, the truth is that they're simply accessories and not meant to replace a healthy diet and exercise. Herbs that increase metabolism may be a good option for those who want to lose weight and improve health, as they allow you to keep eating a regular diet but speed up your metabolism to burn calories and fat more quickly.

Green Tea

Green tea gas a thermogenic effect, raising metabolism by actually increasing body temperature and inducing the body to release norepinephrine, a chemical that speeds up calorie burning. While green tea has caffeine, its properties when it comes to raising metabolism and helping with weight loss are not specifically related to the caffeine itself.

Kelp

Kelp, as well as other seaweeds, raise metabolism in two ways: they affect the thyroid gland and they increase basal metabolic rate (the speed at which your body burns calories while at rest). Iodine, an important component of kelp, has a direct effect on basal metabolic rate.

Hawthorn

Instead of directly affecting metabolic function, hawthorn stimulates the thyroid, leading to a faster metabolism as a secondary reaction. Hawthorn also reduces water retention and increases energy levels, allowing you to exercise more intensely and for longer periods of time.

Spices

Hot spicy foods can raise metabolism for up to 25 percent and for several hours after the meal. Hot spices such as hot mustard, capsicum and pepper can be easily added to meals, including soups, sauces and salads to increase metabolism and stimulate thirst.
