You want to lose weight and maintain a healthy appearance, so naturally you're thinking about running, maybe hitting the weights and of course, cleaning up your diet. But don't make the common mistake of not capitalizing on one relatively easy way of maximizing your efforts: increasing the rate of your metabolism.

Step 1

Eat breakfast daily. By eating first thing in the morning, you give your metabolism an early fuel injection and reduce the sensation of hunger that inevitably arrives mid-morning. Further, according to a study by the International Journal of Obesity, it may be a good idea to go "hog wild," eating bacon, eggs and other fatty foods because they better prepare your body to burn all varieties of foods throughout the day.

Step 2

Work out vigorously. The more lean muscle your body has, the more able it is to metabolize food and churn through fat and calories. A mix of aerobic exercise and weight training will do the trick. Your metabolism retains a fast pace for several hours after a workout, so get your exercise in the morning and give the fire an early spark.

Step 3

Eat more frequently. Again, this may seem counter-intuitive, but it isn't. By eating several extra small meals and snacks, rather than three larger meals, a day, you're consistently providing your metabolism with food, but avoiding the feasting sessions that strain your digestive system and slow the fat-burning process.

Step 4

Shelve the booze. When you drink alcohol, it quickly enters into your bloodstream and then heads for your liver, where it is eventually converted into a substance called acetate. Your body will choose to burn through the acetate rather than its fat supply, slowing the metabolic process.
