Gum disease can be caused by the growth of bacteria in and around the gums and connective tissue. According to a 2009 article in "Natural Health" magazine, gum disease such as gingivitis is usually caused by not taking care of your mouth's health properly. "Life Extension" magazine also cites smoking, poor nutrition, hormonal changes and certain medications as causing or increasing the risk of gum disease.
Step 1
Take a daily folic acid supplement. Your dentist can help you figure out how much you should be taking based on your diet and the health of your mouth. You can also try asking your dentist for topical folic acid, which is sold in liquid form and can be used to directly massage your gums.
Step 2
Search for mouth rinse that contains folic acid. These are usually sold at dentist offices and contain 0.01 percent solution of folic acid mixed into a standard mouth wash. According to 'Life Extension" magazine, this can not only help with gingivitis already present, but it can also strengthen your defenses and the health of your mouth, so the inflammation is reduced and the possibility of recurring episodes is diminished.
Step 3
Take folic acid along with coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin C, as recommended by Dr. Emily Kane on her medical blog. These nutrients improve oxygen flow to the cells and can help with the cell turnover in the mouth. According to Kane, the mucous membranes in the mouth have a very rapid cell turnover, so keeping your mouth healthy and clean will prevent plaque from forming and gum disease from appearing.
