The quiet seaside town of Bar Harbor, Maine, may be small and cozy, but it is also a year-round hub of activity. While its main streets and town square offer plenty of retail and sight-seeing opportunities for tourists and residents alike, more fitness-oriented outdoor enthusiasts can find plenty of engagement in its local parks. Bar Harbor is home to several well-maintained municipal parks with plentiful outdoor recreation, and it is also home to Acadia National Park, which broadens the scope of fitness and outdoor opportunities considerably.

Hiking and Biking Trails

The parks of Bar Harbor make maximum use of the idyllic seaside location, which offers a more temperate climate than towns further inland. Many Bar Harbor parks emphasize the natural landscape; the layouts are aimed at encouraging visitors to take in and appreciate the scenic settings. Harborview Park faces the ocean directly, and its hiking and jogging trail borders the oceanfront entirely on one side of the park. Village Green Park and Agamont Park are more centrally located near the town square and main streets; they have hiking and jogging trails designed to be oases of respite from busy town life. Acadia National Park has a biking trail designed to foster appreciation for Maine's unique ecosystem.

Winter Sports

Maine has an infamously harsh winter climate. While that is mitigated somewhat by Bar Harbor's southern location in the state, the town is nevertheless primarily known as a summer destination. However, there is no shortage of winter sports and outdoor activities in Bar Harbor. The majestic Acadia National Park provides ample opportunities for mountain climbing, winter camping and hunting, while many municipal parks offer snowshoe and snowmobile trails, as well as space for sledding. The Glen Mary Pool is frozen over in winter and converted to an Olympic-caliber hockey rink, where local hockey associations play. When not in use by athletic leagues, the frozen pool is a popular ice skating rink among residents and winter visitors of all ages.

Aquatics and Water Sports

Bordered by the Atlantic ocean, Bar Harbor has a large array of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts who are also water bugs. While the ocean waters can be a little icy even in the summer months, many swimmers aren't deterred by the lower temperatures. Acadia National Park has miles of popular beaches, many of which allows dogs to go swimming right along with their owners. Parks bordered by the ocean have many piers for fishing, and visitors and residents alike can be found sailing off the coast nearly year-round. Glen Mary Pool is a beloved wading pool for kids 10 and under in the summertime.

Athletic Fields

Bar Harbor has several ball fields throughout the town that are used year-round by its numerous athletic associations, as well as recreational users and families. These fields are tailored to various sports, including baseball and football. There are also tennis courts, basketball courts and running tracks through and around many of the parks' recreation centers. The Glen Mary Pool converts into a large ice skating rink used by hockey players and ice skaters, both serious and casual.

Camping and Mountain Sports

Acadia National Park, home to the largest mountain peak on the east coast of the United States, provides several spots for scenic family tent-camping year-round. Campers and visitors can scale the granite cliffs of the mountains in the park, either on their own, or in tours guided by park rangers. The park provides family-friendly programs that include children, as well as adults-only programs. While there is no beachfront camping allowed, both the Blackwoods Campgrounds and the Seawall Campgrounds, the two major sites in the park for camping, are within a short walk to the local beaches. Visitors who bring their bicycles can enjoy rugged mountain biking along historic roads once used by horse-drawn carriages.
