Camping in Newport News

Considering its location along the water, you might imagine that Virginia's Newport News is an ideal destination for those who enjoy a variety of water activities. The city, however, is also a great place to visit if you're looking for camping options. Whether you're interested in relaxing in a natural environment or getting active in the outdoors, camping in Newport News will fit your needs.

Geography

Bordered by the Hampton Roads Harbor, Newport News is within minutes of Virginia destinations including Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. According to the city's Tourism Development Office, the land of Newport News is about 23 miles in length and just 3 miles in width. The 8,000-acre Newport News Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the United States, according to the city's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Campers at the park can expect to see animals such as otter and deer among the meadows, woodlands and lakes.

Camping

Almost 200 campsites are available in Newport News located among the city's woodlands. According to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, sites provide access to electrical and water hook-ups, heated showers, flush toilets, sewage disposal and laundry facilities. Sites also feature grills and picnic tables. If you need supplies, the park campgrounds also have an on-site camper store.

Water Recreation

Camping in Newport News is an ideal choice if your goal is to spend some time on the water. If you have your own boat, you can use one of the park's launching ramps to head out on the water. You can rent canoes, paddleboats and rowboats at the campsite office as well. If you're interested in seeing what fish are biting, be sure to visit one of the campground's two freshwater lakes designated for fishing.

Activities

Plenty of activity options are available off the water. The Newport News Park features 30 miles of hiking and biking trails in addition to two public golf courses. An archery range is also near the campground, but you must complete the park's archery safety program prior to getting access to the range, according to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. If you're looking for family-friendly activities other than the on-site playgrounds, check out the park's Nature Center featuring nature exhibits and Civil War artifacts. If you're camping during the summer months, be sure to get the schedule for the center's nature and history programs.

Considerations

According to the city's parks and recreation department, the Newport News Park campground does allow pets, but you will need to provide verification of current rabies vaccination. If you plan on heading out on the biking trails, all cyclists age 14 and under must wear a helmet. Helmet rentals are available at the park. You'll also need to obtain a permit if you intend to do any fishing at the lakes.
