The role of the intestines in a variety of health disorders remains the focus of much scientific study. However, in cases of candida overgrowth, doctors readily point to the digestive tract as the stronghold from which the troublesome organism gains a foothold in the body.
Candida
Existing peacefully in most, problems begin when the yeast becomes overgrown and begins to colonize the intestinal wall. Leon Chaitow, a naturopathic practitioner and the author of "Candida Albicans," explains that this regularly occurs following the use of antibiotics or a high-sugar diet. Typical symptoms of overgrowth include fatigue, itching and brain fog.
Sugar
Sugar acts as the fuel source for the pathogenic yeast. Jonny Bowden, a board-certified nutritionist who has released several books on nutritional approaches, highlights the removal of sugar from the diet as a necessity in overcoming candida overgrowth. The sugar ban, which includes fruit, helps to starve the yeast population.
Starch
While not a direct fuel source for the candida, eating carbohydrates can also end up feeding the yeast population. As Bowden explains, foods like bread, pasta and cereals contain a lot of starch. These starches do not feed the yeast directly but, under the influence of digestive enzymes in the intestines, break down into sugars which can sustain the candida. Accordingly, you should avoid eating too much starchy foods.
Anti-Candida Foods
Specific foods may speed up the elimination of candida, demonstrating a measurable anti-fungal effect inside the body. Dr. Lawrence Wilson, a U.S. physician who has helped treat a number of patients with yeast problems, notes how a combination of garlic, coconut oil, grapefruit seed extract and pau d'arco tea can help kill off the candida quickly and effectively.
Yogurts
According to Dr. Wilson, live yogurts can play in important role bringing the intestines back into balance. While most commercial yogurts contain a lot of added sugar that may compromise the success of the regime, unsweetened live yogurts provide an excellent source of beneficial bacteria which can help repopulate the intestines and create a healthier ecology there.
