The gears of the 10-speed bicycle allow you to increase and decrease the pedaling resistance to adapt to the upward or downward slopes of the riding surface. The 10-speed bicycle is commonly ridden on paved streets, yet you can easily switch out the tires to comfortably ride on mountain biking trails. The rear tire replacement for the 10-speed bike remains a necessary procedure for a flat tire. Sharp objects such as nails or glass can puncture the inner liner of the rear tire which is commonly referred to as the bike tube.

Step 1

Locate the cylinder-shaped air valve extending from the metallic rim of the rear tire. Remove the small black-colored air valve cap by twisting it with your forefinger and thumb. Deflate the bike tube of the rear tire by pushing the sharp edge of the flathead screwdriver into the top of the air valve.

Step 2

Insert the flathead screwdriver into the area between the deflated rear tire and the circular silver colored rim. Push down on the handle of the flathead screwdriver to pry the tire up from the rim. Pull the rear tire away from the bicycle rim. Insert your forefinger and thumb into the hollowed out lining of the rear tire.

Step 3

Place your fingers around the deflated tire tube. Pull up on the tire tube to remove it from your old or punctured rear tire. Examine the bike tube to ensure it has not been punctured. Place your new rear tire onto a flat surface. Insert the deflated tire tube into the lining of your new replacement rear tire.

Step 4

Stretch the flexible rubber tire to encompass the back rim of your 10-speed bike. Insert the air valve through the corresponding hole in the metallic rim. Inflate the bike tube of your replacement rear tire with a hand-held bicycle pump to fasten it in place. Tighten the air valve cap in position with your forefinger and thumb.

Step 5

Sit onto the seat of your 10-speed bike to ensure the rear tire has been adequately inflated. Pedal forward slowly to make sure the replacement rear tire has been properly aligned onto the metallic rim.
