In mountain biking, many cyclists prefer to use clipless pedals. A special cleat in the bottom of the mountain bike shoes snaps in place on the pedals. This allows the cyclist to push and pull the pedals for greater power. The cleats are recessed into the sole of the shoe to allow for normal walking. Though there are several configurations of cleats for mountain bike shoes, the Shimano Pedaling Dynamics cleats are among the most popular. Regardless of the type, the cleat attaches to a cleat plate inside the shoe with special bolts.
Step 1
Compare the cleats you want to install to the screw holes in the mountain bike shoe itself to verify the cleat is compatible with the shoe hardware.
Step 2
Remove the insole of the mountain bike shoe. Insert the threaded cleat plate into the slot in the sole inside the shoe and align the holes in the cleat plate with the holes in the sole. Replace the insole in the shoe.
Step 3
Apply grease to the cleat bolts. Place any cleat washers or spacers in the grooves around the bolt holes in the shoe, with the bevels in the washers or spacers facing out to match those on the bolts.
Step 4
Align the holes in the cleat with the holes in the cleat plate within the shoe. Insert a cleat bolt into each hole and tighten them finger tight.
Step 5
Locate the center of axle mark on the cleat. This is a thin line in the side of the cleat, which identifies the point where the cleat aligns to the pedal axle. Position the cleat on the shoe to your preference, using the axle mark as a reference point. Tighten the cleat bolts with the Allen wrench.
