If you plan to follow a low-carb diet, you are going to have to combat any type of sugar addiction you may have. Most low-carb diets require that you replace refined sugar and refined flour foods with proteins and vegetables. Beating a sugar addiction is both a physical and mental issue. According to Psychology Today, if you are addicted to sweets, you may need the sugar for your body and mind to feel normal.

Step 1

Cut out sugar completely. It is easier to stop eating sugar completely than gradually decreasing the amount of sweets you eat, suggests CNN.

Step 2

Change your shopping habits. To eat low-carb and combat your sugar cravings, you need to start looking at labels. Steer clear of processed and prepackaged foods. Instead, choose fresh produce, lean meats and some whole grains. Certain low-carb diets allow whole grain products in moderation.

Step 3

Keep sweets out of sight. According to a study done in 2002 and featured in Psychology Today, diminishing the visibility and convenience of sweets led to a decrease in consumption. Put sweets in drawers and away in cabinets if you have them in your home. Never put out a candy dish or fill a cookie jar if you are trying to get over a sugar addiction.

Step 4

Follow a heart-healthy low-carb diet. When eating a low-carb diet free of any sugar, your meals should include lean proteins and heart-healthy fats. Some low-carb plans are high in saturated fat; you should steer clear of this type of eating plan. Canola oil, olive oil, fish, nuts, seeds, skinless chicken and turkey breast are some examples of healthy food choices for a low-carb diet.

Step 5

Snack on low-carb and sugarless snacks. If you are feeling a craving for something sweet, eat a low-carb alternative to curb hunger. Keep snacks on hand, such as veggie slices, nuts, seeds and slices of cheese.
