What To Look For

As you plan your next expedition for a hike or bike ride, considering getting a GPS navigation device to help you get there quickly and without problems. GPS navigation devices give you turn-by-turn directions, which is particularly helpful if you're driving by yourself; distracted driving due to navigating from a paper map while you drive is extremely dangerous. The best GPS navigation devices are small enough to take from car to car and offer you a way to easily enter your destination.

Common Pitfalls

GPS navigation devices have built-in maps upon which they impose your satellite-determined location. Since roads are constantly updated and added, it's common for the maps to be incorrect and needing an update. You may find that your GPS navigation device gets free map updates, but it's more likely that you will have to pay for this service. Some manufacturers offer an annual subscription to their updates, while others charge a per-use fee. If you cannot update a GPS navigation device, do not purchase it, as it will quickly become almost useless to you.

Where To Buy

As GPS devices become more common, you can find them almost everywhere. While you can purchase a system at a discount store like Target or Walmart, you're better off shopping in a specialty store with a wider selection. If you're going to be using your GPS primarily in the car, you can go to an electronics store like Best Buy to find some of the best GPS navigation devices. If you want a model that can also be used as you hike or bike, a sporting goods store such as REI will be a better fit.

Cost

GPS navigation devices will vary in price based on their size and features. Typically, car-based devices with more features will cost the most. Some of the options you may find include Bluetooth, an iPod or iPhone connection and an FM radio transmitter. CNET found that the price range on the five best GPS navigation devices in 2010 was from $100 to $390.
