Weight loss boils down to burning more calories through physical activity than you consume through the foods you eat. You can lose weight by decreasing caloric intake or by increasing physical activity. Numerous calorie counters for various activities are available online and allow you to estimate how many calories you burn while engaged in physical activity. By tracking the calories you burn in your daily activities you can better achieve weight loss goals.
Cumulative Calories Burned
The activity calculator at CaloriesPerHour.com calculates how many calories you burn while doing specified activities. This calculator sums the calories burned by the list of activities you feed into it. As with all activity calculators, you must specify your weight. The more you weigh, the more calories you burn while doing any particular activity because you are moving a greater amount of mass.
To use the calculator, first type in your weight and how long you will do the activity. Click on your chosen activity from an alphabetized list of hundreds of activities, click the "Calculate" button, and the calculator estimates the number of calories you will burn. Choose another activity, specify the amount of time you will do it, click the "Calculate" button, and the calculator displays the calories burned in the first activity, the number of calories burned in the second activity and the total calories burned for all entered activities. You can continue to enter daily activities into the calculator to estimate the total number of calories burned for the entire day.
Single-Activity Calories Burned
The calories-burned calculator at Calorie Control is an example of a simplified, single-activity calculator. It calculates calories expended doing a particular activity for the period of time specified. This calculator doesn't total calories burned from different activities, and offers relatively few types of activities from which to choose. The reduced list of activities is easy to scan, but is not useful if your activity of choice is not included. Also, this calculator doesn't offer the option of choosing the intensity level of the activity. Some calculators allow you to specify a walking or running pace, in miles per hour, and estimate the calories burned accordingly. This calculator assumes you are walking at a moderately vigorous level, for example.
Streamlined Total Calories Burned
The calories-burned calculator at ACalorieCalculator.com/calories-burned-calculator/ offers a tool that falls between the comprehensive activity listing of CaloriesPerHour.com and the single-activity calculator at Calorie Control. ACalorieCalculator offers a simplified list of activities organized alphabetically under logical groupings, such as walking, running, conditioning exercises, sports, housework, lawns and gardens. The listings do allow you to specify the intensity of walking, running, bicycling and a few other activities. This calculator also keeps a running tally of calories burned from all activities entered.
General Activity Calculator
Enter your age, gender, height, weight and general activity level, and the calculator at ACalorieCalculator.com estimates your daily caloric needs to maintain your current weight given your body mass index and current activity level. This calculator also provides an estimate of how many calories you should consume to lose one pound a week. This estimate gives you a target number for how many calories to consume daily. This figure can be adjusted to account for increased activity level by using a calories-burned calculator.
