As home exercise equipment gets more technologically sophisticated, a more complex array of potential problems comes with it. Sometimes you can rule out possible causes, or even fix the problem entirely, on your own. For example, if your Schwinn exercise bike displays an E2 error message on the console, you can address all the possible causes yourself.
Step 1
Loosen and remove the screws that hold the console in place on the mast with a Phillips screwdriver. Set the screws aside.
Step 2
Lift the console gently off the mast. Inspect the wide, flat data cable connector that joins the console data cable to the back of the console. If the cable is not securely connected with the small latch snapped firmly into place, connecting it securely might clear the error code.
Step 3
Use an Allen wrench to loosen and remove the hex bolts that hold the console mast in place. The bolts are located where the console mast joins the bicycle frame, just above the resistance mechanism.
Step 4
Lift the console mast away from the resistance housing, allowing the data cable to slide down through the hollow mast. Examine the cable. If it's cut or crimped at any point along its length, replacing the cable should resolve the error code.
Step 5
Inspect the connection where the data cable leading from the console meets the data cable that protrudes from the bicycle frame. If the two cables aren't mated securely, fastening them more securely might resolve the error code.
Step 6
Replace the bike console if none of the steps have resolved the error code. You can do this yourself: Connect the data cable and the heart-rate monitor cable, which has a small, round connector, to the back of the console. Then place the console against the flat panel on the top of the console mast. Fasten the console in place with the same four screws you removed earlier.
